Sarah was Abraham Lincoln's only sibling by birth. She was two years older than her brother and by all accounts the two children were quite close growing up in Kentucky and Indiana. When her mother died, eleven-year old Sarah took care of the household until her father Thomas remarried the following year.
In 1826 Sarah married Aaron Grigsby and setted with him just two miles south of the Thomas Lincoln farm. Some months later she announced that she was pregnant. Unknown complications during the pregnancy claimed the life of both Sarah and her baby. She died on January 20, 1828, just 21 years old.
Redmond Grigsby later recounted how Abraham Lincoln reacted to the news of his sister's death: "I never will forget that scene," he said, "He sat down in the door to the smokehouse and buried his face in his hands. The tears slowly trickled from between his bony fingers and his gaunt frame shook with sobs."
Sarah Lincoln Grigsby was buried with her baby in Old Pigeon Cemetery behind Little Pigeon Baptist Church. Her husband Aaron outlived her by just three years and was buried beside her. Today their graves are located within the boundary of Lincoln State Park.
