This marker is next to the Homestead, birthplace of Milton S. Hershey, who was born on Sept. 13, 1857. The Homestead was a farmhouse belonging to Milton's grandfather. It is now the home of offices of the Milton Hershey School, and is situated on the School's campus. The school was founded in 1909 by Milton and his wife Catherine, when it became clear that they would have no children. The School was endowed by Milton Hershey with his personal fortune. While the school was originally founded for orphaned boys, today it is a residential school for 1,500 underprivliged boys and girls in grades K-12. Milton acquired the Homestead when he returned to Derry Township in 1903 to build his factory and town.
