"The recreation center at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park has a unique architectural styling. In 1992 a gym was added to the building bringing the square footage to 20,261. This large space is filled with opportunities for all ages.
King has a number of rooms for community gatherings, including a lounge, kitchen, activity rooms, gym and craft room. The arts and craft room features two kilns for fired ceramics, along with several tables for other craft activities.
The center provides exciting programming to take advantage of facility. The ceramics programs are popular, and the huge fieldhouse, which features a striking vaulted ceiling, offers sports activities for both young and old.
The Park Board acquired 18.5 acres of land including a large playground in 1968. At this time the park was known as Nicollet Field due to its location on Nicollet Ave. and in honor of Joseph Nicolas Nicollet, a French explorer and geographer.
In 1968, the same year the recreation center was dedicated, the park was renamed to honor slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "
