This iconic head belonged to the Doggie Diner at the corner of Sloat and 46th, which became the Carousel Diner when the old DD chain closed. Later, the Carousel Diner also closed, and the current owner of the property no longer wanted the doggie head. In January 2005, the head was moved to be displayed on city property, the median of Sloat Boulevard.
The process of citizen outcry saving the Doggie Diner head was extensively chronicled in Zippy strips over half a decade. (Thanks to TheBeanTeam for pointing me to this specific strip which shows the moving operation.)
