I have looked for reasons and history of this statue. I can tell you that it is new to this exact location within a year of my posting.

It is located just south of the Chicago Tribune building in a large courtyard next to a taxi stand. Hard to miss it.

The original painting "American Gothic" is housed in the Chicago Institute of Art.
