Gough, a reformed alcoholic dubbed "The Apostle of Cold Water," was a famed temperance orator in the 1850s. He had signed a pledge of total abstinence in 1842, and for the next 44 years he captivated audiences here and abroad with his impassioned and sometimes humorous appeals for sobriety. He lived in this two-story frame house from 1848 to 1886.
