This bronze "Spirit of the American Doughboy" stands on a 7' pedestal of Bedford stone. It was erected in 1927 and appears to still be in excellent condition.

A plaque on the front of the pedestal reads:
"Erected 1927 by Francis M. Dodge, Wilbert M. Allen and other citizens
in grateful recognition of the patriotic service rendered by Fountain County men and women during the World War 1917–1918."

A bas relief on the reverse of the pedestal shows two doughboys in profile with the inscription "For God & Country" above and "Semper Fidelis" below (hence the conclusion that it is meant to honor the Marines).

The copyright plate is at the base of the sculptor to the doughboy's right and reads:
Spirit of the American Doughboy
copyrighted by E. M. Viquesney, sculptor
Spencer, Indiana
