Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Brigadier General in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Lieutenant in Company G, 4th Vermont Infantry Link for action on May 3, 1863 at Salem Heights, Virginia.
