In 1896, only seven years after Lick Observatory was completed as the world's first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory, a second observatory was added to the astronomical facilities on Mount Hamilton. In a way, the Crossley Telescope is even older than the Great Lick Refractor, since it was used since 1879 in England. In 1895, it was sold to British politician Edward Crossley, who gave it to the Lick Observatory in 1896.

Like the Lick Refractor, the Crossley Telescope is not computer controlled and has to be slewed by hand. But in spite of its astronomical age, it is still a useful instrument and has lately been instrumental in the detection of extrasolar planets.
