The bridge was built in 1898 by the Rock Island Rail Road and and was replaced much later. The exact time of the replacement is unknown but the bridge was moved to its current location in 1981.
Presently the City and State Parks and Wildlife are negotiating to have the State take ownership of the bridge and the nearby train station and to add them to the Fort Richardson historical site.
