Toronto is a small community in eastern South Dakota, Deuel County.
The post was organized in September, 1919. The post was orginally named the Guy C. Erickson post in honor of the first soldier to be killed from the community in WWI. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Erickson. Guy was killed in France on May 3, 1917.
Arlo Olson was the first WWII soldier killed from Toronto. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Olson. He was a Captain in the infantry and was killed in action at the Volturno River in Italy on October 28, 1943.
The American Legion post has approximately 80 members. They have a very supportive Auxiliary Unit.
The Post holds their meetings in the Community Building. They helped finance the new building along with other businesses and community citizens.
They meet one a month and are very active in Veterans programs.
