The courthouse at the corner of High Street and Court Street is a solid stone structure with a gold dome. It sits on the edge of downtown Dedham, itself an old town that dates back to 1636 and has been the seat of Norfolk County since the county was formed in 1793.

The court was the site where Ferdinando Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were tried and found guilty of murdering a paymaster and a security guard at a Braintree company in 1920. They were executed in 1927. Many people then and now believe that they were innocent of the charges. In 1977, fifty years after the trial, Governor Michael Dukakis made a proclamation that, though did not comment on their guilt or innocence, indicated that they had been treated unjustly. No plaques or monuments were found on the grounds referring to the incident. In addition to the link provided, there are other sources of information where you can learn more about the trial.
