In March 1910, the Canadain Northern Pacific Railway was incorpoated. On February 18,1911 a line was dedicated and work began on the grade from Victoria to Port Alberni. By December 1916, the subgrade had been completed for 137 miles, only 4 miles from Port Alberni. At Underwood Cove a cast-in place concrete culvert was completed in 1913 with the date embossed on the downstream side. Across the creek, is the end of CNPR grade, althought the trains never went past Cowichan Lake. The rail bed was constructed without motorized machinery and impressive rock cuts and filled areas can be seen along the way. On December 20,1918 a year after the Canadian Government had assumed nominal control over the CNPR, Canadian National Railways was formed , and all of the British Columbia operations of the CNPR were absorbed into the nationalized system. Today the old subgrade is used as a hicking trail, it paralles Alberni Inlet, work on the trail is continuing and it will soon extend to Franklin River.
