The origins of the Saint Elias Church began as the "Mens Committee", with their first meeting on November 10, 1929. Before long, the urge to fulfill the spiritual needs of their families was so strong, that these families sought out a more permanent place to worship. In 1930, the parish purchased their first church, the former Lafayette Methodist Church for $9,000. In the year 1936, a fire caused severe damage to the building, causing a period of little or no attendance and a short term lack of leadership. However, several younger members of the parish took it into their hands to bring the parish back to life, and within a year, things seemed to be running smoothly again.

In 1963, the parish purchased the land for the current building. It consists of seven and one half acres, located on Onondaga Hill. In 1964, plans were drawn up for the new facility, however, it took several years before the church was competed. The first service was held at the new church on July 20, 1969.
