On the Highland Avenue Bridge, to the right of the eastbound lane is a survey disk mounted under the base of a railing.
This survey disk is located above Route 128/I-95 over the median between the north and south lanes. To reach the disk, from Needham Center or Needham Heights on Highland Avenue, travel north, then east around a gradual bend in the road to the bridge over the highway. The mark will be on the right, about halfway across the bridge. The best place to park is beyond the bridge to the vacated Ground Round Restaurant parking lot, then walk back (be VERY cautious when walking across the entrance ramp - the drivers cannot see you). From the parking lot, the disk will be on the left, just after you pass over the northbound lanes.
The disk is set in concrete at the base of a steel railing. The disk is in fair to poor shape, with several gouges and abrasions. Around the edge, portions of the words "Massachusetts Dept of Public Works" can be made out, as well as a penalty statement further inside. Inside a circle on the disk face were the words, "ELEV" and "BMN" and the serial number "10003".
This disk is threatened. For several years a project to widen Route 128 from Wellesley to Canton has been underway. One of the last parts of the project is to totally reconstruct this intersection and widen the road. This will take place in one or more years.
So, come and mark it while you still can!
