From the Sign attached to the sculpture:

The oldest intersection in the city is known as Five Points and lies just south of the crest of Peachtree Ridge which runs through Atlanta. Indian trails, wagon roads, stage coach routes, railroads and now highways have followed the course of that ridge. From here, travelers could turn north on peachtree St. and follow the ridge, take Decatur Street east to Decatur turn south on what is now Peachtree Street, SW to the old Sandown Road and Points west to Alabama, or follow Marietta Street North to Marietta Georgia. Line Street, laid out between 1853 and 1859 and renamed Edgewood Ave, makes up the 5th streed in the intersection.

George Beasley joined the School of Art and Design faculty in 1970 after receiving a M.F.A. in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He received his B.F.A. in sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1968. At GSU he has multiple duties as professor and the head of the sculpture area and the School’s graduate advisor. He teaches all levels of graduate and undergraduate sculpture. Beasley believes effective teaching to be an outgrowth of studio/apprentice practice. He stresses the idea of teaching by example using the production of almost all of his own work in school studios as a vehicle to demonstrate concepts and processes. To this end sculpture classes are relatively small in size making it possible for him to do most of his teaching as personal directed study. All class work is concept driven. Craft technology is taught as needed to support concept. Individual and group critiques are significant components of the learning experience and scheduled regularly.

Inspiration for Beasley’s own imagery originates from personal and familial links to Celtic history and to the iron foundries of Scotland and the US. He credits these links with his decision to become a sculptor and his adoption of foundry work as a means of artistic expression. This decision was reinforced through his graduate work with Julius Schmidt at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Schmidt was the first American artist to legitimize and promote foundry work as integral to the sculpture experience. Through this experience Beasley evolved a commitment to art making and teaching which elevates the art-making process to the same status as the art object. This involvement in a process-oriented art and its gradual evolution into "performance" art has led full circle to an appreciation of the importance of the history and the sociology of foundry work.

Much of Beasley’s current work is site-specific installation/performance created to convey to viewers the experience of the “dance” of iron making. The structures, which remain after the initial event has taken place, are visual testimonies of those events. A series of cast bronze and iron sculptures are then made which derive their inspiration and composition from these events. They often serve as documents containing notation on the surface through the use of Ogham markings and Gaelic verse.
