Although this legend is claimed by several states, studies by noted folklore researcher John Garst supports local stories that the famous race between man and steam drill occurred at either the Coosa or Oak Tunnels south of Leeds. The coincidence of folklore and local records indicate that the race happened on September 20, 1887, possibly with a burial for John Henry at Sand Ridge Cemetery.
