This anchor was recovered after the shipwreck of Gypsy (sometimes spelled Gipsy).

According to the museum sign:
"The Gypsy was different. She was relatively short, stubby, and small, at 103 feet in length and 290 tons. She had neither the long foredeck, nor the large deckhouse of the typical coastal steamer. She had plenty of power in a 225 horsepower reciprocating steam engine. As shown above off Point Lobos, she looks somewhat comical, yet she was a tough, durable boat who came to grief because a substitute Captain made an error, and not through some fault of her own.
Approaching Monterey from Moss Landing after dark about 8 p.m. with a heavy sea running, the substitute Captain mistook a red lantern over a sewer trench at the foot of Hoffman Avenue in New Monterey for the lantern at the end of the steamer wharf in Monterey. He realized his mistake about the time the ship hit the rocks. The crew abandoned ship in good order and a crowd soon collected, intent over the next 24 hours on collecting whatever was salvageable, including some 450 cases of bottle beer."

The museum is open - free, with a small donation suggested - Thursday through Monday 1-4PM.
