Pasteur Crater (19.6 degrees N, 335.5 degrees W), named in 1973 after Louis Pasteur, the well-known French chemist, is located in Arabia Terra. Arabia Terra is located in the Southern Highlands of Mars. Pasteur Crater is located near Cassini Crater, which is the large crater in the right-hand portion of the image above. Because of its relationship with Cassini, Pasteur Crater is easily located on general maps. Pasteur Crater is 114 km wide.
Arabia Terra itself is of great interest due to the discovery of sedimentary rock layers and evidence of water erosion. Martian geology has some perplexities. Mars seems to be divided into two halves. The Southern Highlands are high, studded with craters, and considered to be older than the Northern half. The Northern Lowlands are mostly uncratered. Currently, research is being conducted by NASA on the hypothesis that a flood occurred which created the spectacular erosion patterns found in Arabia Terra. Other researchers, such as Richard C. Hoagland, are exploring the possibility of planetary collisions creating the distinct halves of the planet. Theories abound and investigation continues. Source info: (
