Do you remember when Dairy Queen had this iconic sign? According to the owner of this location, this is very last one in Canada. People come from far and wide to experience the nostalgic ice cream offered here.
Opened in 1953, this is the oldest existing Dairy Queen in Canada and only one that still retains the original sign style and is also the last one to have this building design. All others have been updated with the new lips and red sloped roof. The owner still retains the original contract from Dairy Queen, a mere one page document, which is his pride and joy in addition to the classic stylings and equipment.
During the 50's, a period when racism was much more prevalent, this location featured a segregated window for serving the black community. The window has since been removed.
The original sign did feature neon, which the owner hopes to be able to afford to replace in the next few years to further restore this to its classic condition. Even the way the sign hangs over the edge of the building is a throw back to days gone by and fortunately the local government has seen to allowing this to be preserved as heritage.
According to the owner, he receives frequent comments about the quality and taste of the cool treats served here. He attributes this to the equipment being able to process the milk without 'cutting' and they also use other quality controls. In fact, he estimates that 97% of the products served here are under the original recipes taught to him by the original owner from whom he purchased this location from in 1998.
