Prisons, sanatoriums, theatres, and hospitals. Saying that these places are likely 'haunted' is like saying the Senator Kennedy is a Democrat. So, it is no surprise that various people have witnessed activity that might be considered hauntings - and I'm not talking about the 'Haunted House' that the Jaycees put on in one of the buildings until last year.

The place was established in 1889 as a place to treat alcoholics. At the time, it was a cutting edge facility, treating alcoholism as a disease. Over time, it became an institution for the mentally ill. The facilities started as a row of house like buildings when it was treating alcoholism. The buildings were later connected and other buildings were built.

There are two cemeteries located within a mile of the main campus.

An excellent account of the Massachusetts Mental Hospitals can be found here:

The complex is currently being completely redone a mixture of residences commercial and government buildings have or will be built on the property. Already, some of the buildings have been converted, while some others are still empty. A lonely chimney marks the center of the property. The campus is generally a construction site. Some parts have been completed and people may be living in them, while others are still abandoned. Gone are some other buildings. If visiting, pay attention to areas that are closed off and don't enter any abandoned buildings. The following link has some information about the redevelopment of the site.

The Foxboro Jaycees had a Haunted House on the location every Halloween for 19 years. They had to stop in 2008. Here is a link for the story:

Some witness accounts found on the Internet:

"Doors closing, Sounds that come from knowhere [sic], shadows moving, and other strange things happen all the time. My farther worked there in the 70's when they closed and he says that many interesting things happened there at night when everyone was asleep. Things turning themselves on for example...There is a bowling alley in the basement and the pins were manually set. There was no matchene [sic]. I remember one day being one of the only people in the building and hearing bowling balls and going down there and seeing the pins set-up that were not before."

"The buildings still remain, and strange things do happen. For instance you could hear and see the outside doors trying to be pushed out, as if they were trying to escape. Some also say it could be homeless people in living in there. Others believe these are the spirits that have been beaten severely or have been tortured. Reported by a former employee at the hospital during the 1980s that Buildings A and B where freezing no matter what the weather was. Doors slam shut, and the feeling of being watched." - January 2007 - "Some still see eerie figures walking around the construction site left there."
