The
Seven Cities Lagoon, with its two lakes - blue and green - limited by a
boiler, the islet of Vila Franca, nature reserve and the valley of
Furnas,
with its fumaroles, hot mud and water and medical, are just
some examples of the many attractive points that San Miguel offers.
Other points of interest of the island is the Lake of Fire, which
is situated in Sierra de Água de Pau, and the Lake of the
Conger,
located a few kilometers from Vila Franca do Campo.
In the area east of the island, is the Pico da Vara - the highest
elevation of the island - with 1,103 meters of altitude. In the central
area,
the Sierra de Água de Pau with 940 meters in height
and in the
West is located Caldeira das Sete Cidades with 850 meters of altitude.
The city of Ponta Delgada still have their churches and palaces of
the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. This place has the greatest
religious festival of the archipelago,
where acorrem thousands of
people each year: the feasts of the Lord Holy Christ of Miracles, on
the fifth Sunday after Easter.
Another manifestation of this island are religious pilgrims. At
the time of Holy Week, groups of several dozen men cross the island on
foot, for eight days,
praying and singing in all churches and Ermidas
who encounter along the way.
