The tall brick chimney is prominent landmark in this portion of Foxborough. Today, it sits idle and the small building attached is in decay. However, the buildings around it are in various states of construction as they are converted from state mental hospital facilities into residential and commercial space.
The Massachusetts Hospital for Dipsomaniacs and Inebriates at Foxborough, also known as the Foxborough State Hospital, was started in 1889. It was one of twelve that were eventually established in the state. This hospital lasted until the 1970s and was empty for decades until the late 1990s when the property has been slowly converted to residential and commercial space.
The chimney is behind a row of buildings that have been converted. There is a recently paved road that goes by the chimney. There were no "No Trespassing" signs posted in the area; however, as construction is still going on in the area, be respectful if areas are temporarily closed off in the future. The web site given is for Chestnut Green, which is the name of the project.
The chimney was likely an incinerator for trash.
