Speaking so clearly of man's desire to explore space, this work of metal is a beautiful entry piece as one arrives at RMSC's Planetarium.
The RMSC's page on the Somaini Sculpture provides this following info and much much more.
"In gleaming polished bronze and twisted rough metal, the sculpture, 17 feet high, stands for all time before the Strasenburgh Planetarium, symbolizing the expansive thrust of man's wonderment of the Universe.
"It is the creation of Francesco Somaini, of Lake Como, Italy, internationally recognized sculptor who works only in metal - 'the material of our time'."
— From the program for the unveiling ceremony
September 19, 1970"
Part of the page states it is 17 feet in height but another says only 14 feet. It seems much larger in real life when standing beneath it. The piece has been in place for over 35 years, and forged in the foundry of the artist himself. Don't deny yourself, click the previous link to learn much more about this piece, how the light is reflected through the use of polished and non-polished areas, how cut lines emphasize key areas... and opinions of those involved in the project.
