The Wapack trail goes up and over Pratt Mountain in SW New Hampshire. From this small clearing at 1711' elevation, the entire corner of the state is visible, and to the south, the Boston skyline is visible on clear days. The mountain is located in the largest roadless tract of forest in southern NH, so the view is uncanny for its thousands of acres without human-made objects. Website: (

Reaching the trail: Take Rt. 119 to West Binney Hill Road. If you have a (real) 4WD vehicle, you can drive (about 1 mile) right up to the trailhead at Binney Pond wildlife area, and park there. (Coordinates: N42.72045 W71.90908) Cars and SUV's will need to stop before that. The trail is marked by yellow triangles. The hike from the trailhead up to the overlook includes about 300 feet elevation - some steep sections - and takes about 45 minutes. There is a clearly marked spring about 1/3 of the way up. If you continue to follow the trail beyond the overlook, you will find an ideal view of Mt. Monadnock to the northwest. (see photo). Caution - dogs must be leashed - porcupines abound.
