The Mansfield Municipal Airport, located at 265 Fruit Street in the towns of Mansfield and Norton, MA, is a community airport that has a lot of activity. It is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Boston, MA and 20 miles northeast of Providence, RI. The airport has the following facilities:
- 2 Runways. The primary runway is 3,500 feet long and has a bituminous pavement (asphalt) layer.
- A Taxiway network, also paved.
- Aircraft hangers
- Aircraft repair facilities.
The airport was originally started in the 1920s-30s on an old horse trotting track. It was donated to the U.S. in WWII and used by the U.S. as a naval cadet training facility. In 1947, the town acquired it under the war surplus act. Improvements, including paving the runway, have been made over the years.
A long time ago, I attended a hot air balloon festival. They did not launch from the airport, but at one time, they all were fired up and looked like colored mushrooms in a field.
