From the NRHP application: Originally named the Central School, it was the first school constructed after the charter for the city of Kingsport was granted in 1917 and was the first municipally funded school in Kingsport. Kingsport’s first municipal bond was issued in 1917 in the amount of $150,000 to fund the school construction. Changing with the times, George Washington was expanded in 1951 to accommodate population growth and was the first school in Kingsport to integrate in 1961.
