During the winter months, the City of Peterborough sets up an Ice Skating rink on the Trent Canal, near the famous Peterborough Lift Lock. The rink can be up to a kilometre long at times. This is in the fine tradition of other Canadian waterways, such as the Rideau in Ottawa, or the Assiniboine/Red Rivers in Winnipeg.
You'll often find families playing hockey near the Maria Street swingbridge. There is ample parking along Ashburnham Street just south of Hunter Street. Steps are provided to get down to the ice level.
You should call Public Works to find out if the ice conditions are safe 745-1386 or 745-1387. Note the Canal does not feature amenities such as washrooms or hot drinks.
