The Illinois Valley was the the site of Oregon's first gold strike in the 1850's and many old mines still dot the landscape around Cave Junction, the only incorporated town in the valley. John Wayne owned a ranch not far from here. Now it is best known as gateway to the fabulous Oregon Caves National Monument.
