The mission was established in 1816 by John Stewart (1786-1823) to serve the Wyandott Indians. Following John Stewart's early death in 1823, the missionary work at the site was continued by Rev. James B. Finley who worked with the Wyandott to constuct Mission Church. Despite the US government's attempts to relocate the Wyandott west, they remained at this mission and it remained active until 1843 when the Wyandott were finally moved by the government to Kansas and Oklahoma. They were the last remaining tribe in Ohio.
Mission Church was restored in 1889 and again in 1983. It stands in good condition today.
