Formerly known at the North Bend Municipal Airport, the name was changed better to reflect its service region and to avoid confusion with the growing town of Bend, Oregon, in the central part of the state.
The airport is built with runways actually out into the water of Coos Bay. A new terminal was opened in the summer of 2008, with the new control tower still under construction. Access from the terminal to the runway is down a long, steep escalator and there are no jetways.
There is now only one commercial airline (Sky West/United Express) servicing the airport with connections only to Portland, Oregon, and San Francisco, California. There is brisk private aircraft traffic due to the proximity of several golf courses and a casino.
The airport is operated by the
Coos County Airport District
