The Chelsea Clocktower is the most beloved and recognizable landmark in the City of Chelsea. Depictions of the clocktower are on Chelsea's water tower, Chelsea City Seal, and the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce logo.
The clocktower was originally a water tower for the Glazier Stove Company in the early 1900's. According to Our Hometown by Cynthia Furlong Reynolds: "After a second disasterous fire at his plant, (George Glazier) built the Clock Tower to mask a giant water cistern which store 35,000 gallons of water that could be utilized in case of fire."
The clocktower is no longer a water tower, but pieces of the old wooden water tower are still encased in the structure. They are too large to be removed. The old industrial clocktower complex is being renovated into a mixed use of retail, office, and warehousing. The clock was renovated and is now controlled digitally. It chimes on the quarter hour.
