The temple of Sri Kamadchi Ampal exists in Hamm since 1989. Having lain in the first years in the west of the town, the gods and the temple came in 1997 in the town district of Hamm - Uentrop. The history of the temple is closely connected with the escape of ten thousands Tamilen. They left Sri Lanka from 1983 when the conflict intensified between the singhalesischen majority and the Tamilian minority. Presently in Germany live approx. 60,000 Tamilen from Sri Lanka, about 45,000 of them are Hindus. In 1993 the believers celebrated for the first time the annual temple party with a public procession. The goddess Sri Kamadchi holds her big exit in this party and walks round the temple on the surrounding streets. Thus it can be seen not only by many, but blesses after Hindu faith at the same time the town and in her living person. To the public procession yearly taking place in May / June believers of the whole continent come between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors, before all things. In July, 2002 the big temple was consecrated by costly rituals and was opened. The temple is strictly conceived after ritual default. The goddess looks from the central shrine in the direction of the east, as the rising sun. The interior of the temple is 700 m². The temple main entrance built in South-Indian style (Göpuram) is 17 metres high. The temple measures 27 x 27 metres. It is the biggest South-Indian temple of Europe.
