A project of the Wise County Veterans Group,
dedicated November 11, 2005
Beginning clockwise from the entrance, the Path of Sacrifice and Valor leads visitors through 18 brass placards that commemorate American sacrifices in battle from the Revolutionary War to the present. Inlaid in the walkway are spaces for 7,000 pavers to personalize those who have honorably served our country and will continue to serve in the future. 1,500 are honored in this way today. Our park was recognized by one visitor as the best tribute to our armed forces west of Arlington National Cemetery. An eternal flame is centered in the park to signify that sacrifice is the price we must pay for eternal vigilance and the defense of our freedoms.
The park was planned, designed, managed and completed solely by veterans of Wise County and the generous contributions of its patriotic citizens. No governmental funds were sought or utilized in this project.
The Wise County Memorial Park is owned by the City of Decatur. It is open to the public 24 hours each day, seven days a week.
