Duke University can trace its roots back to a small Randolph County, North Carolina school founded in 1838. This school later became Trinity College, which moved to Durham in 1892. A large donation by tobacco magnate James B. Duke in 1924 lead to the school being renamed for James Duke's father Washington Duke.
With the funding from James Duke, a new separate campus was built from 1927 to 1930.
The Trinity College site is now called the East Campus and the newer campus is called West Campus. West Campus is the larger and more well-known of the two campuses. Duke Chapel is located at the center of West Campus and is Duke's most recognizable landmark.
Duke's claims to fame are its basketball teams, excellent academic programs and Medical Center. Duke was recently ranked as the 13th best overall university in the world.
