This furnace was part of the Sterling Ironworks, which began production in the mid 1700's and were in operation for almost 100 years.

From this furnace came the iron that made the anchors for the frigate, the USS Constitution and for the huge chain that was stretched across the Hudson River near West Point during the Revolutionary war.

This chain was designed to keep British warships from sailing up the Hudson and attacking Patriot outposts in the Hudson River Valley.
