It is difficult to determine the exact age of the home, but it is known that the house in its current form was standing in 1854. At that time it was sold by Dr. Christian Speigle. During the Civil War, the house was owned by Darius Wilcox, a pro-Union citizen. Two encounters are significant with regard to him and the property. First, on Friday August 16, 1861, ten to fifteen armed secessionists came into town, demanding the surrender of his arms. He responded by saying the first who would approach him, he would shoot. Neighbors came to his aid and averted a potentially deadly showdown. The second incident was on Saturday, August 23, when Col. Joseph C. Porter raided Palmyra. Mr. Wilcox saw several of the Confederates stealing peaches from his trees. He confronted the soldiers with a revolver, shooting one of them, inflicting a serious wound. The house remained in the family, being passed down to the Wilcox's middle daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, until 1903.
