A.D. Brown (Alanson David) was the president Hamilton-Brown Shoe Co. he was born, Granville, N. Y., March 21, 1847; son David and Malinda O. Brown. First work was on father's farm, then in drug and grocery store, Granville, N. Y., for a little over one year. In July, 1866, went to Columbus, Mississippi to work for uncle, Charles W. Brown; in three years became partner, and in two years more sold interest in business for $13,000; came to St. Louis in 1872 where he met James M. Hamilton, and with him established shoe firm of Hamilton & Brown. In 1875 firm became Hamilton, Brown & Co., and in 1883 the business was incorporated with $400,000 capital, which increased to a multi-million dollar firm. Mr. Brown died May 10, 1913. A.D. Brown was the older brother of George Warren Brown, the founder and former president of the larger and still existent Brown Shoe Company and whose mausoleum is located directly across street from this one. The mausoleum was designed by St. Louis architect Isaac Taylor in 1910.
