Nibbles Woodaway has been an icon on top of the New England Pest Control building for many years, now.
According to the company's web site, Nibbles was constructed in October, 1980, to make the company visible along the highway (very successful). In 1990, a contest was held to name the critter, and "Nibbles Woodaway" was the winning entry.
Originally, the insect was purple to be true to the colors of a termite under a microscope, but the sun bleached the color to blue, and the color stayed that way ever since.
In 2002, the bug was taken down to be refurbished and sent on a five stop tour. While he was gone, the company logged over 500 calls inquiring over his absence. He returned to his perch in August.
This bug has appeared on "Dumb and Dumber."
Rhode Islanders are proud of their 'blue bug!'
At the time the pictures were taken, Nibbles was in Christmas decorations. It's embarrassing enough to be totally wrapped in Christmas lights - but ANTLERS TOO??!!
