In 1902, JOhn D. Rockefeller purchased this estate and used it for his summer residence until his death in 1937. After his death, his family donated the estate to the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders to be used as a county park.
Unfortunately, budgeting reasons forced the mansion to be demolished, but many of the other structures remain. The old carraige house is now home to the Ocean County Police Academy.
My husband grew up in Lakewood in the 1950's and remembers this park being called "Rocky's Place."
Activities include swimming, tennis, soccer, softball, fishing, hiking, biking and more. There are numerous playgrounds and group activity fields. An off-leash dog park, as well.
