West Monroe has an estimated population of 3,450 people, most of them being on rural delivery. West Monroe was originally going to be named "Monroe" after President James Monroe, however, there were already two other towns in New York State that had that name. It was decided, since this town was the furthest west of the three, it would be called "West Monroe". West Monroe is a quiet community along the northern shore of Oneida Lake with its past going back to around 1808, when it was split off from a large plot of property that was owned by the state. Electric lights came to West Monroe in 1938, telephones came in 1945, roads in the town were named in 1952, and in 1969 street lights were put up at intersections.
