My Son is a small group of ruins located close to the city of Ðà Nang in central Vietnam.
Built between the 4th and 13th centuries, these building demonstrate the Vietnamese Hindu Champa Kingdom that once existed in the area.
Many of the impressive 'red' brick tower-temples severed a spiritual/religious purpose. Pictures and text - in Sanskrit and old Cham - are carved into many of the rocks on site.
Between 1937 and 1943, French scholars began restoration of the temples at M? Son. However, many historical buildings were destroyed during the Vietnam War, which saw the area carpet-bombed in August 1969. The surrounding area is still rendered dangerous through the presence of unexploded land mines.
