Long Description:
The historical marker found at Carabelle Beach commemorates the training site of over a quarter million men for amphibious landings during World War II. The beaches and uninhabited islands along the North Florida coast were used to prepare soldiers for conditions in the Pacific Islands as well as to practice amphibious landings for the European invasion. The facility was originally called Camp Carabelle, but was renamed Camp Gordon Johnston in honor of Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Col. Gordon Johnston.
