Barnum House holds significance in the Province of Ontario because interest in its preservation in the 1930s lead directly to the creation of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO). Now Barnum House is owned by the arms length branch of the provincial government, the Ontario Heritage Trust which operates it as a museum. It was built circa 1820 by an American immigrant Eliakim Barnum who settled on the north shore of Lake Ontario near Cobourg. Barnum became a successful businessman with ties to the militia and the Conservative party of the day. The house he built is a fine Canadian example of neoclassic domestic architecture. The Ontario Heritage Trust has conducted an extensive restoration of the building which includes interior decorating that reflect the 1820-40 period. Barnum House was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1959 and plaqued by the federal government in 1984.
