Long Description:It's hard to miss a distinctive building in a major motion picture.
It's even harder to miss one that's become an icon of downtown Los
Angeles. This Frank Gehry-designed structure opened in 2003, and
has been getting rave reviews ever since. "Get Smart" isn't the
first film to shoot here; among others productions, the recent
blockbuster "Iron Man" also features the hall.
It's "Get Smart," however, that really puts the building on
display. In fact, the last several minutes of the movie take place
during a concert (no more spoilers, honest!). The exterior scenes,
shot in daylight, are a big part of the story, and feature major
characters. While reviews and box office results for the film may
have been mixed, the Disney Concert Hall is a definite star!
An interesting aside: the original design featured exterior
panels made from stone, but a shift in budget resulted in the
selection of (more affordable) stainless steel. Upon completion,
the shiny steel caused blinding reflections for neighboring
buildings and bizarre, sky-high temps (approaching 140° F) on
sidewalks. Using a buffing technique, the shiny steel was
strategically "dulled" in 2005.
