This old school was built in 1707 and stands next to the Church gates by the row of almshouses. Francis Boughton, from the line of Boughtons since 1546 endowed the school when he became Lord of the Manor after his Uncle died in 1663.
There is a plaque on the wall still seen today which reads as follows:
'THIS FREE SCHOOL, ERECTED A.D. MDCCVII., WAS ENDOWED BY FRANCIS BOUGHTON, OF CAWSTON, IN THIS PARISH, ESQRE., FOR INSTRUCTION OF THE CHILDREN OF PARENTS RESIDING IN THE PARISH OF DUNCHURCH IN THE LEADING BRANCHES OF USEFUL KNOWLEDGE, AND IN THE PRINCIPLES OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND'
The building became two residences after it closed as a school and it was reported as such in 1951. During 2007 it underwent major restoration and became one residence.
