This plaque commemorates William Cowper, the famous poet and translator of Homer who lived between 1731 and 1800. It reads as follows:

'WILLIAM COWPER
1731 - 1800
POET & LETTER-WRITER
TRANSLATOR OF HOMER
LIVED HERE
1768 - 1786'

The plaque was placed on 15th February 1968.

William Cowper lived here in Orchard Side when he moved from Huntingdon with the Unwin family to be under the ministry of the Reverend John Newton, who was the evangelical curate for the town.
