The Civil War cannon barrel that originally graced this site was, because of its valuable metal content, donated to assist the United States' war effort during World War II. In its place, this 1918 Howitzer barrel, a World War I model was mounted.
Decades later, the Howitzer barrel was removed and placed into storage, leaving the memorial unadorned.
In 1991, the barrel was refurbished and remounted through funds provided by the Colorado Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
As a result, this unusual memorial has ties, not only to the Civil War, but to World War I, World War II and even the American Revolution. With its history and purpose in mind, this memorial was re-dedicated, 87 years after its original dedication.
