This is one of the nicest trails in Santa Teresa County Park in the foothills of south San Jose. There is a fee for parking in the day use area in the center of the park (where this trail begins) but it is possible to enter from free street parking, quite a bit further away from the start. Park maps are usually available at the site, or can be printed from the park website, but are not really necessary because the trail is well-signed at every junction. From the start, take the Mine Trail about 0.1 mile to the first junction, where you take the Rocky Ridge Trail to the left. The trail traverses a lovely valley and then takes a long zigzag up the ridge to Coyote Peak in 1.8 miles. There is a four-way junction just below the peak; follow the sign (or your commonsense) straight ahead to the top. From the peak, in clear weather, you can see all the way to San Francisco. To return, take the short and steep Coyote Peak trail down to Hidden Springs Trail down to the parking area, or of course it's possible to return the way you came. Total distance is less than 4 miles and total time around two hours.
