Prior to the first direct primary by the Crawford County Democrats in 1842, party candidates were nominated by their parties through the use of caucuses or party conventions. The members of the Crawford County Democratic Party wanted to increase the voice of all voters in deciding which of their candidates would run in the general election and held the first primary election.
This now-common form of selecting party candidates for the general election became known as the Direct Primary System.
